Two Santa Cruz natives came to the rescue of an injured hiker, and then the arriving paramedic last Thursday. Air Force pulmonologist Jeremy Kilburn was hiking with a friend in the Shasta Trinity forest when he fell off a rock, breaking his leg and injuring his ankle. Santa Cruz residents and summer camp counselors, Elizabeth Fitch and Bryce Harbert, came across Kilburn on the trail and radioed for help. When a paramedic helicopter arrived, a flight officer exited and was struck in the head by the slowing but still spinning blades. The group descended a hill and began to help the paramedic with lifesaving measures. Their quick thinking saved the man’s life.
