The Salinas Police Department has secured funding for body-worn cameras with a $100,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and $49,000 from the Bureau of State and Community Corrections. In a press conference Monday, Chief Kelly McMillin said the cameras are a proven tool for supporting the department’s priorities of accuracy, accountability, and transparency. The body camera purchase was originally requested in 2011, but was put on hold due to severe budget cuts.
