OPPONENTS OF A PROPOSAL TO SHUT DOWN THE SALINAS MAIL PROCESSING CENTER ARE PLANNING TO HOLD A RALLY TOMORROW. OFFICIALS AT THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE ARE CONSIDERING A PROPOSAL TO MOVE OPERATIONS FROM THE SALINAS MAIL PROCESSING FACILITY TO THE SAN JOSE CENTER. THE MOVE IS EXPECTED TO SAVE THE POSTAL SERVICE NEARLY 600-THOUSAND DOLLARS, AND WOULD RESULT IN THE LOSS OF ABOUT 26 POSITIONS. THE UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE HAS SCHEDULED A MEETING TO DISCUSS THE PROPOSED CHANGES AND HEAR PUBLIC COMMENT, THAT MEETING IS SLATED FOR 5 P.M. TO 7 P.M. ON WEDNESDAY AT SHERWOOD HALL, 940 NORTH MAIN STREET, IN SALINAS.
