a salinas elementary school was evacuated this morning after a fire broke out on campus. around 8:40 a.m., fremont elementary school administrators reported a fire started in a portable unit. the room was not being used by any class or staff. fire officials believe the heating unit was where the fire originated. a lockdown on campus has been lifted and students have returned to class.
