THE SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL HAS APPROVED A CONTROVERSIAL 58-UNIT, 4-STORY, APARTMENT COMPLEX ON A 5-1 VOTE. THE STRUCTURE WOULD BE BUILT ON THE 300 BLOCK OF OCEAN STREET (SOUTH OF BROADWAY). THE PROJECT REQUIRES A SPECIAL PERMIT, BECAUSE THE STRUCTURE (AS PLANNED) WOULD BE TALLER THAN CURRENT PROPERTY ZONING IN THAT AREA ALLOWS….AND THE COMPLEX WOULD ALSO INCLUDE 52-HUNDRED FEET OF COMMERCIAL SPACE….IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. A DEMOLITION PERMIT WOULD ALSO NEED TO BE ISSUED, SO THAT 22 SMALLER RESIDENTIAL UNITS CAN BE DEMOLISHED.
