Re-planet has closed all 284 of its recycling redemption centers, laying off about 750 employees. Re-planet was the largest operator of recycling redemption centers in California. The owner of the company said they stopped operations due to the increased business costs, and the falling prices of recycled aluminum and P-E-T plastic. Cal-Recycle, the California agency in charge of recycling, has been asked to require all grocery and convenience store chains to start redeeming cans and bottles.
