Monterey county supervisors have voted to move forward with plans to build a recreational trail on fort ord’s “whispering oaks” parcel. Supervisors voted unanimously on Tuesday to direct county staff to start researching possibilities for constructing a path on the land. The move would require re-zoning the parcel for “open space” or “recreational use” rather than “mixed-use development.” The land was designated for a monterey-salinas transit hub, however that arrangement fell apart. Re-zoning the land would make it unlikely that anything similar would be built there anytime soon. It could be as much as a year before a study is presented to county supervisors.
