PPE Masks Can Be Pollution 12-30-20 17:20 DC

A local marine conservation group says its members are finding more masks and personal protective equipment, also known as PPE, in litter and around beaches.

Santa Cruz-based Save Our Shores says it is concerned animals might consume the PPE litter which could be dangerous for their health.

As the pandemic continues, beachgoers are also noticing disposable items popping up on the ground.

Save Our Shores said they see PPE trash in grocery store parking lots and local streets near beach access points.

Save Our Shores Executive Director Katherine O’Dea said they also find the trash on the beaches and in the dunes.

Experts are concerned these items could break down into microplastics, which can block an animal’s digestive tract.
