ABOUT 100 PEOPLE ATTENDED LAST NIGHT’S MEETING IN SALINAS, AND CRITICIZED THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE’S PLAN TO CLOSE THE SALINAS MAIL PROCESSING FACILITY, AND MOVE THOSE SERVICES TO SAN JOSE. THE MEETING, WHICH WAS ORGANIZED BY THE U.S.P.S., WAS DESIGNED TO GARNER INPUT ON THE PROPOSED RELOCATION. THAT MOVE, IF IT HAPPENS, COULD SAVE THE U.S.P.S. MORE THAN HALF A MILLION DOLLARS, BUT WOULD END 26 SALINAS-AREA JOBS. NO ONE AT LAST NIGHT’S MEETING SPOKE IN FAVOR OF THE PROPOSAL.
PART OF WHY THE U.S.P.S. IS CONSIDERING THIS CHANGE IS BECAUSE The Salinas center, HANDLED ABOUT 100 THOUSAND fewer pieces of mail, compared to 3 years ago.
