The city of Hollister is again considering merging its police and fire services with the county. Last year city leaders voted against the move, but a $3.5 million deficit has made them reconsider the idea. The proposed combination would have the San Benito County Sheriff’s office take over city patrols, to allow the city’s police department to be eliminated, and the money repurposed. The city hopes to open two more fire stations as well, to decrease response times in the county and particularly in the city of San Juan Bautista. Discussions are ongoing.
