Nurse JoAnne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach. JoAnne starts todays show discussing the failure of the drug combo Zetia for lowering cholesterol. The drug did not live up to it's billing despite the fact that it has been widely prescribed for nearly 2 years.
Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and JoAnne Conaway discuss a news article concerning the "off-label" use of Botox for chronic pain. Both pointing out that the drug has not been approved for use as a pain reliever by the FDA. Because of this long term use as a pain reliever has not been studied so long term side effects are still unknown.

Dr. Wallach starts the show today discussing a news article titled "The Guide to Predicting a Healthy Future". Basically the article presents guidelines to extending life through disease prevention. The way the medical industry proposes to prevent disease is through screening tests. Doc contends that doctors die at an earlier age than the average population from the same diseases they are trying to prevent. He poses the question "How is their advice if they can't even save themselves"?

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss an article concerning doctors ties to the drug industry. While many are calling for change and an end to the gifts, trips and free lunches afforded by drug reps change will be slow if not impossible. In a survey conduct last year of doctors polled 94% had direct ties to the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Wallach starts todays show discussing the outcome of a study on the cholesterol drug combo Vytorin. The study found that Vytorin worked no better in lowering cholesterol than the generic version. Doc also explains that there is no need for any of these types of drugs. Asserting that no study has ever been done to prove a direct link between cholesterol levels and heart disease.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a Harvard Medical School study on ER visit wait times. The study found that all types of ER visits are now 36% longer than in 1997. Researchers also discovered that heart attack patients run a 25% risk of waiting 50 minutes or longer to get treatment.

The first found that among the 19 countries studied the U.S. ranked last in preventing deaths through timely medical intervention. The second study concluded that people who eat fruits and vegatables can extend their lifespan up to 14 years.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning the use of "placebos". The study found that of doctors surveyed 45% often prescribed placebos in their clinical practice. Of those that do prescribe these "dummy pills" 20% said the outright lied to patients telling them they actually getting drugs.
