Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses acid reflux and heartburn in relationship to low acid levels in the digestive system. Contending that most Americans have poor digestion especially the elderly. As we age our ability to digest fats and proteins decreases.

Pearls of Wisdom

Ben and Doug discuss a recent research study published in the journal Thorax. Researchers have found a link between symptomatic asthma and lower levels of vitamin C in the blood stream. In the study those with higher consumption of foods high in vitamin C were half as likely to have asthma symptoms.

Mark has questions regarding his cholesterol levels. Georgie asks Ben about the proper ratios of omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. Keam is obese and trying to lose weight. Carolyn heard Ben asserting that people should stay away from long term drug use. She was curious if the same applies to eye drops. Shirley has been diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Richard asks Ben about the importance of phyto chemicals.

Dr. Wallach discusses the HN1 Bird flu and possible pandemic world wide. A family of chicken ranchers in indodesia has died alerting the WHO doctors to the possibility the virus has jumped from human to human for the first time.

Billy and Doc discuss a recent study regarding the FDA needing more power over the process of drug approval, effectiveness, and drug company oversight.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses a recent study that contends people should not be concerned about taking antioxidants or eating antioxidant rich foods.

Pearls of Wisdom

Ben and Doug discuss a recent study regarding "sleep inertia". Alluding to that "groggy" feeling people often experience when first awakening.

Vern has questions concerning an 83 year old woman who broke her pelvic bone. Her doctor ordered her off of nutritional supplements and prescribed "Ensure". Liz asks if there are any nutrients that have positive effects on the adrenals.

Dr. Wallach discusses the health and longevity of doctors. Asserting that doctors only live on average to age 56. Dying of cancers, heart attacks, stokes and diabetes. The same types of health maladies that we go to them to try and prevent. Doc also talks about aging in relationship to caloric intake. Citing studies that indicate a lower caloric in take with the proper amount of vitamins and minerals directly correlates to longer life.

Pearls of Wisdom

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a recent study done at Princeton University. The study looked at the addicative qualities of sugar. Finding that a high sugar diet was linked to the development of more dopamine receptors. Concluding that this was what caused rats to become addicted to sugar. Dr. Wallach disagrees stating that "cravings" are caused by mineral deficiencies. Also asserting that a high sugar diet causes an increased dumping of minerals, thus making the cravings worse.

Sherree has been diagnosed with diffused scleraderma. Mike is a recovery alcoholic calling to give Dr. Wallach an update report on his condition. Robin recently tested positive for TB (tuberculosis). Errol has questions concerning his joints that grind together.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben asserts that the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself if you give it the right building blocks. Contending that those building blocks are proper diet and nutritional supplementation. Expounding that protein is vitally important for good health.

Pearls of Wisdom:

Doug and Ben discuss a recent news article concerning tanning beds. Recent research done at Wake Forest University has discovered that many frequent users of tanning salons are actually addicted. Apparently, when exposed to UV rays the body produces morphine like endorphins.

Doctor Wallach discusses a recent article regarding new methods of treating asthma. The method is being tauted as the first non-drug treatment for the disorder. Dr. Wallach disagrees outlining a nutritional supplement way of reducing the severity and frequency of asthma attacks.

Pearls of Wisdom:

Doug and Doc discuss a news article concerning a recent report regarding preventative health measures. The report outlines 25 different measures that can be done to prevent disease. The first was taking an aspirin a day to reduce heart risks. Also discussed were colon cancer screening, immunizations, blood pressure tests and smoking cessation therapies. Dr. Wallach asserts that many of these things can be done at home with the aid of a doctor. While others such as aspirin therapy can cause other health problems such as stomach bleeding.

  • Arlene has several health challenges as a result of previous procedures. Such as reflux, anemia, excessive mucous production and digestive issues.

Doctor Wallach discusses the latest book from Youngevity and Dr. Wallach. The book titled "Dead Athletes Don't Lie". The book outlines the importance of nutritional supplementation for athletes. Describing the various nutrients the body loses through perspiration. Not just potassium and sodium as some sports drink makers would have you believe.

Pearls of Wisdom:

Doug and Doc discuss a news article concerning recent research at Boston University. The researchers claim to have found a gene variant that they believe predisposes some people to obesity. This gene variant found in about 10% of the population predisposes people to 30% to 50% greater risk for obesity. Doug asks if only 10% of the population has the variant then why are more than 30% of the popaltion suffer from obesity. If obesity were genetic only 10% would be obese.

Doctor Wallach discusses a recent press release from the NIH (National Institutes of Health) that states in cannot find any research to support a recommendation that people should take daily multivitamins. Although, NIH also stated they would not recommend people already taking mulitivitamins should stop taking them. Doc asserts that this is at least a step in the right direction. Because the NIH is preparing to conduct their own study and in the past had stated that supplements did no good in preventing disease.

Pearls of Wisdom:

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a news article regarding a victim of a recent clinical drug trial. Ryan Wilson participated in a trial of drugTGN`1412 and immediately had multiple organ failure along with 5 other participants. Wilson the most severely affected was unconscious for three weeks and will lose parts of his fingers and toes.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses a recent FDA mandate that will require food manufacturors to list transfat levels on food label. Ben outlines the different types of fats and how the body uses them. Asserting that some fats such as cholesterol are actually more benefical to the body than often thought.

Pearls of Wisdom:

Ben and Doug discuss a newly discovered compound in mushrooms from europe. Researchers believe the compound can be made into a new type of antibiotic. Ben asserts that although antibiotics are sometimes needed but are often over-prescribed. Outlining the various problems that have developed due to over-prescribing of antibiotics.
