Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses the importance of the immune system in protecting the body from disease and illness. Also outlining the importance of the digestive system in building a strong and effective immune system. Asserting the "leaky gut syndrome" is most likely the most common compromise of the digestive system. This syndrome allows the wrong types of food particles to enter the body.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug and Ben discuss a news story concerning sun screens. The article and Ben assert that the marketing of sun screens actually adds to the risk of skin cancer. The increased risk lies in the false sense of security that is created by people feeling they are "protected" against the sun's harmful rays. Unfortunately, sun screens don't protect the band of UV (ultra violet) light that actually causes cancer. Sun screens protect against UVB the burning ray. While it is UVC that causes cancer and skin aging.

Norma has questions regarding the levels of vitamin A in some of the Youngevity products. Charles's wife recently had a major seizure but believes it was brought on by circumstance and wants to get off of her prescribed medication.

Dr. Wallach discusses a couple of news stories. The first concerns an article on arthritis that outlines the growing numbers of Americans who are diagnosed anually. Suggesting patients do low impact exercise and take drugs for the pain. The next story concerns a patient who was given tainted cartilage and later died from the infected tissue. Doc asserts that neither story was necessary because with the right raw materials the body can rebuild those joints. Without using drugs or having surgeries the body can rebuild by using the "Pig Pack Plus".

Pearls of Wisdom

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a news story concerning recent research on vegatables. The study done at Wake Forest University's School of Medicine found that mice given a diet of vegatables that constituted 30% of their caloric intake had a reduced risk of atherosclerosis. In fact those on the veggie diet had 38% less vascular blockage than mice fed a vegatable free diet.

Dr. Wallach mentions that Chinese doctors have determined the H5N1 flu virus has mutated again. Meaning it could be closer to becoming a strain that transmits from human to human. Dr. Wallach also discusses antioxidants and their role in absorbing "free radicals" in the human body.

Pearls of Wisdom

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a recent news article concerning salt. The AMA (American Medical Association) is asking the FDA to put warning labels on processed foods and restaurant foods that contain more than 480 milligrams of salt per portion. The AMA is also asking the FDA to revoke salt's GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status. Doug and Doc discuss the importance of salt in the diet for digestion and the lack of evidence to support the theories that salt contributes to heart disease.

Dr. Wallach discusses the impending H5N1 avian flu. Asserting that it's not a matter of if it will hit, but when. Contending that the virus is getting closer to being transmitted from human to human. Doc states that some states have even warned citizens that emergency services aren't prepared. Advising that people prepare themselves by stocking up on food and medical supplies.

Pearls of Wisdom

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a news article concerning U.S. emergency rooms. A recent report from the Institute of Medicine states that ER's are not prepared to handle a severe crisis. Such as hurricanes, bioterrorist attacks or a pandemic like the avian flu. The report outlines that hospitals have staffing shortages and under equipped to handle a major disaster.

William calls with a testimonial for Youngevity products along with asking Dr. Wallach about chelation. Jennifer has been taking birth control for several years and is concerned about possible side-effects. Goldie has a small dog that is unable to keep it's food down. Dr. Wallach discusses the "metabolic syndrome". Outlining the various symptoms and disease states associated with this syndrome. Dr. Wallach also recommended his "Hell's Kitchen" book as a good resource to find out more information.

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a news story concerning a change in Medicare reimbursements. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service has proposed a change that would pay less for complex heart procedures such as heart device implants. So money could be re-alocated for more common things such as pneumonia. A doctors group called the "Heart Rhythm Society" is contending this will cost lives.

Dr. Wallach discusses the link between fried foods and cancers. Discussing a news story regarding a consumer group (CSPI) that is suing KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). The group contends that either KFC lower the levels of transfats in their products or put out warning labels. Doc outlines the increased risks of cancers due to the free radicals produced in the frying process.

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss news article concerning a recent meeting of the California Strawberry Commission. During the meeting UCLA's assistant director for the Center for Human Nutrition spoke regarding the health benefits of strawberries. Extolling the virtues of berries because of their antioxidant capabilities.

Dennis is a diabetic and recovered alcoholic who is dealing with high blood pressure. Margaret has birds that have problems with mites.

Dr. Wallach discusses over weight and obese children. Asserting that the problem arises because of nutritional deficiencies. Contending that children crave the sodas and sugary juices because of mineral deficiencies called "pica" and "cribbing" in animals.

Pearls of Wisdom

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a recent news story concerning a study done at Vanderbilt University. After studying medical records of almost 30,000 people. Dr. Willaim Cooper found that pregnant women taking ACE inhibitors for high blood pressure had an increased risk of giving birth to infants with serious birth defects. In fact the children were twice as likely to be born with serious heart and brain disorders when compared to those not exposed to the medications.

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a news story concerning interactions between drugs and nutritional supplements. In the article and a recent survey authors lump herbal plant medicines in with nutritional supplements such as vitamins and minerals. Doc and Doug find fault with several assertions made in the article.

Leigh's husband has cataracts and she is curious about a nutritional plan that could help improve his sight. Geri has a friend diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Peggy has been experiencing a rapid heart beat. Cindy and her husband are planning a trip to China. She asks Dr. Wallach if all the vaccinations her doctor is recommending are really necessary.
