Dr. Peter Glidden fills in for Dr. Wallach discussing the news of actress Valery Harper's terminal cancer diagnosis. Asserting that the war on cancer is lost after trillions have been spent on treatments and research. Contending the healthcare system is a broken model treating only symptoms and not address the root of the problem.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Glidden discuss a news article regarding a study of statin drugs. The study from the University of Michigan found that of primary care physicians and cardiologists surveyed 70% admitted they would prescribe statins to patients who don't have heart disease. Over 750 randomly selected doctors nationwide were given a survey with six different "hypothetical" patients with varying ages and genders. One third of the doctors responded to the survey between 40% to 94% would prescribe statins to patients who had no history of heart disease.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the concept of longevity. Contending it's possible to live to 100 chronologically while feeling as if you are 40 or 50. Outling foods that cause inflammation which is the root of nearly all health challenges.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a new FDA warning. This latest warning concerns the popular antibiotic athromycin sold as Zithromax. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared the risk of cardiovascular death different antibacterial drugs and found Zithromax had a higher rate of death. Drugs in this class have the potential to cause QT prolongation which is an abnormal hearth rthyhm or arrhythmias that could lead to death.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing a news article on heart disease in mummies. Researchers scanned 137 mummies spanning four geographical areas and 4000 years. Finding that 34% had evidence of atherosclerosis while those over the age of 40 at death nearly half had vascular calcification. Leading researchers to believe that quite possibly heart disease isn't caused by a diet of Big Macs. But rather simply the result of the natural aging process. Doc disagrees asserting heart disease is the result of nutritional deficiencies.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article on breast cancer. The story outlines the plight of Judy Valencia who diligently got mammograms routinely. One showed an abnormality so a biopsy was performed resulting in a cancer diagnosis. She underwent a double mastectomy only to later discover she never had cancer at all. A top cancer expert interviewed for the article stated that women should always get a second opinion before doing any treatments.

Dr. Wallach starts the show detalining a story about a recent interaction with an anthesthesiologist. Aside from being extremely arrogant Doc contends the other doctor stated that animal studies can't be translated to humans. Dr. Wallach asserts that if that were true why are virtually all pharmaceutical drugs first tested on animals before humans.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning a study on heart health. The study found that women who ate baked or broiled fish at least five servings a week had a 30% reduced risk of heart failure. The study also found that women who ate at least one serving of fried fish weekly increased their risk of heart failure by 48%. The researchers also determined that darker more oily fish such as salmon or mackerel got more protection than those eating lighter fish like tuna, sole or cod.

Dr. Wallach starts the show talking about the 80 million baby boomers that are headed for epidemics of all kinds. Specifically he addresses the growing number of obese adults in the U.S. Also asserting that many of these over-weight and obese adults are also at risk for developing type II diabetes. Contending that this doesn't need to happen because both problems are a result of nutritional deficiencies.

The story highlights a specific case where a woman had an annuloplasty ring implanted for a leaky mitral heart valve. After the surgery she discovered the device was not on the original list provided by her surgeon. Upon further investigation she learned the device that was implanted had been invented by her own surgeon. To make matters worse she also found out the device was not approved by the FDA.

Citing CDC statistics that state 1.7 million patients are infected in hospitals every year with 99,000 dying from those infections.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news story on a new antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria. The new strain called carbapenom-resistant Enterobacteriaceae or CRE. This new strain was found in 200 healthcare facilities in the first half of 2012 and is proving resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the impending epidemic of joint replacements about to occur in the U.S. Citing previous studies from Harvard University that state both knee and lower back surgeries do no good in the long term. Doc asserts that this is because the surgery is only dealing with symptoms and not the root cause of the problem. Contending these and several other common health challenges are simply caused by nutritional deficiencies.

Performing well over 25,000 of these procedures during his career with his namesake clinic performing over 18,000 procedure annually. With total knee replacements costing around $45,000 and total hip replacements costing $20,000 to $40,000. This even figured conservatively at $20,000 totals 360 billion dollars.

Contending that people with chronic fatigue is now being diagnosed as Lyme's disease because doctors realized that insurance pays twice what it pays for chronic fatigue. Doc asserts doctors that do this are using their patients for ATM machines.

The study looked at over 12 diabetes patients some of whom had developed pancreatitis an inflammation of the pancreas. They found that patients taking glucagonlike peptide 1 sold as Byetta and Januvia were twice as likely to develope pancreatitis.

Dr. Wallach starts the show discussing the problem of obesity and weight gain in America. Citing technilogical advances as some of the reason behind this change. Starting with advances in heating and cooking so there were no longer wood ashes that used to be put in gardens. Then most people are now eating a lot of preprocessed foods that are full of preservatives and sugars.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article regarding a report on health care costs. The cost to insure a family of four has doubled in less than ten years. Health insurance for the average family is now pushing $20,000 a year. Add to that employers are scaling back on how much they pay towards theses costs.
