Dr. Wallach warns of the dangers of exercising with out replacing the nutrients lost through sweating.  Recommending the "Dead Athletes Don't Lie" CD as a good resource to learn more about this concept.  Doc also mentions weight loss and the role leptins play in fat storage within the human body.  Asserting that the new Youngevity product "Slender FX" is a good way to combat leptin production.

Doug and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news articles regarding health issues.  The first article concerns two studies published in the Archives of Opthalmology.  The studies done in the U.S. and Australia found up to a 40% decreased risk of macular degeneration in people who ate fish once or twice a week.  Next they discuss a news article concerning the drug "Effexor" made by Wyeth.  A watch dog group recently found that Wyeth had added "homicidal ideation" to the drug's list of adverse effects.  Although, rare the drug has been associated with homicidal thoughts but the manufacturer did not notify doctors or issue warning labels.  Andrea Yates the mother who drowned her 5 children was taking twice the recommended dose for months prior to the drownings.

Dr. Wallach discusses the various Youngevtiy CDs, DVDs and books available for information regarding the H5N1 flu.  Asserting that people need to be prepared in the event of a pandemic.  He also discusses the leptin plays in weight gain.  Suggesting the new "Slender FX" product from Youngevity for weight loss.

Doug and Dr. Wallach discuss three news articles.  The fisrt concerns the first known case of bird flu found in Spain.  Second they discuss a recent study regarding the relationship between calcium supplementation and weight gain.  The study done at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that women who consumed 500 milligrams or more over the course of 10 years gained less weight than women not on supplements.  Finally, Doug and Doc talk about a form of yoga that is sweeping the country.  The yoga called "Bikram" or hot yoga focuses on 26 postiions and the room temperature is raised to 105 degrees.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses acid reflux and heartburn in relationship to low acid levels in the digestive system. Contending that most Americans have poor digestion especially the elderly. As we age our ability to digest fats and proteins decreases.

Ben and Doug discuss a recent research study published in the journal Thorax. Researchers have found a link between symptomatic asthma and lower levels of vitamin C in the blood stream. In the study those with higher consumption of foods high in vitamin C were half as likely to have asthma symptoms.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Discussing a recent lawsuit regarding Pfizer. Apparently, beta blockers a form of heart medication has been linked to birth defects. Earlier this month a study indicated that cholesterol lowering statin durgs were also linked to similar problems.

Pearls of Wisdom

Ben and Doug discuss a recent Taiwanese study that found certain marinades may cut cholesterol compounds. The compounds known as cholesterol oxidation products are found in proteins after they are cooked. The research found that these marinades (soy sauce and sugar) reduced the formation of COPs during cooking.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses vitamin D and it's relationship to good health. Asserting that it is not a vitamin in the truest sense because your body can actually make vitamin D. However, the human body needs cholesterol in order to make vitamin D. Ben contends that most people on cholesterol lowering drugs are most likely vitamin D deficient.

Doug and Ben discuss a news article regarding a recent court ruling. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently overturned the FDA's ban on dietary supplements containing low doses of ephedra. Now the FDA is calling for the court to overturn the ruling contending the judge does not understand the law.

The suit claiming that sunscreen makers make false claims regarding 'sunblocking abilities', 'waterproof' and 'all day protection'. The suit also alledges that sunscreens give users a false sense of security prompting them to stay in the sun longer.

Dr. Wallach discusses obesity and the problem of losing weight. Doc cites the Ken Cheney story a man that lost 300 pounds using Youngevity's "Ferret Fat Pack". Outlining that the root cause of being over-weight is a mineral deficiency that causes pica and cribbing.

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a couple of news articles. The first concerns a woman in New Zealand who had abdominal pain. Her doctor told her she was fat and prescribed diet pills. Over 16 months later the woman had to have emergency surgery to remove a 32 pound abdominal cyst. Next Doug discusses a story about Sanofi-Aventis and a warning label now on their anitbiotic "Ketek". The label warns of serious liver damage risks while taking this drug.

Dr. Wallach discusses the age differences between athletes and couch potatoes. The average life span of a professional athlete is 62. While the average life span of couch potato or sedentary person is 75. Doc concludes that just being in "good shape" does not allow people to live longer. Contending that as athletes sweat they sweat out a soup of nutrients, namely minerals and vitamins. Dr. Wallach asserts that his "Dead Athletes Don't Lie" CD is a good reference to learn about deficiencies created while working out.

Dr. Wallach and Doug discuss a couple on news articles regarding Merck & Co. drugs. The first concern a recent article published in the New England Journal of Medicine. A review of clinical studies found that Vioxx began to cause heart problems much earlier than previously disclosed. A review of the clinical study found that some users experienced heart damage as early as four months. The second article concerns Merck & Co.'s Gardisil a vaccine for HPV. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is recommending that all girls in the U.S. ages 11 and 12 be vaccinated for HPV (human papilloma virus). The drug was approved by the FDA recommends use in females ages 9 to 26. HPV has been linked to cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers.
