Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of recent news articles.  The first concerns a report done by the Harvard School of Public Health that links weight gain to the sugars found in most popular drinks.  Researchers believe that just one extra soda a day can add as much as 15 pounds a year.  The next article concerns a recent move by Indian officials to ban Coke and Pepsi products from India due to high levels of pesticides in the products.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben discusses a couple of news articles the first concerns a study that found the drug Lipitor in high doses reduced the risk of strokes.  Ben asserts that although that is true Lipitor also greatly increases the risk of bleeding.  The second article is about the 8 foods that cause 90% of the food allergies suffered by 11 million Americans.  Ben also discusses the virtues of eating eggs for good health and a boosted immune system.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben discusses a recent news article tauting fruit as a good alternative for sweet snacks.  Ben disagrees asserting that the fruit does have good nutrients and fiber.  But that fruit is loaded with sugar.

Doug and Ben discuss a news article concerning a done at the Scripps Research Institute.  The study was looking into ways to shut down the "hunger hormone" ghrelin.  Researchers beiieve that regulation of this hormone could lead to an obesity vaccine.

Dr. Wallach discusses the problem of obesity and weight gain in America.  Citing the statistic that nearly two thirds of American adults are over weight and one third are obese.  Asserting that the various fad diets won't work if people don't deal with the root cause.  Doc recommends his "Hell's Kitchen" book as a resource that explains why this epidemic has occurred an the U.S.  Also recommending the "Ferret Fat Pack", "Nature's Whey" nutrition bars, "Chocolate Lover's Dream Diet" and "Slender FX" as possible solutions to weight loss.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss two recent news articles.  The first concerns a report put out by the American Academy of Pediatrics.  The reports states 24,000 children a year are treated in hopitals for injuries received while riding in a shopping cart.  With two thirds of those injuries involving the head and neck.  Next Doug and Doc discuss a study done by researchers at Yale University.  The researchers exposed fetal mice to frequent and prolonged ultrasounds.  Discovering that the ultrasounds disrupt brain development in the unborn mice.  Previous studies also found brain anomalies linked to ultarsound use in human fetuses.

Dr. Wallach discusses a National Institute of Health report on salt.  The report claims that with all of the added salt to pre-processed foods there is no need to add salt to food.  Citing theories that salt causes water retention, increases risk of hypertenion and heart disease.  Doc disagrees contending that salt along with the 90 essential nutrients will not cause the afore mentioned health challenges.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug discusses a  couple of recent news articles.  The first is a Consumer Report on the quality of nursing homes.  The report stated that not-for-profit homes provided a better quality of care than did for profit homes.  Niether type of nursing home actually fared very well by Consumer Report standards.  With for profits meeting the standard of "good quality" 2% while the not-for-profits meeting that standard 7.3% of the time.  The higher care quality in the not-for-profits was attributed to more staffing and registered nurses as staff rather than nurses aids.

Dr. Wallach explains how the new Youngevity product "Slender FX" acutally works.  Outlining how the product mimics a hormone called leptin that the body produces when it senses starvation.  So when people count calories and diet the body actually produces more leptin.  Which in turn intstructs the body to store more of it's nutrients as fat.  Primarily storing the fat in the abdomin and buttocks regions of the body.  The "Slender FX" mimics this hormone thus faking the body into not storing fat and in turn burning stored fats.

Doug and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of recent news stories.  The first concerns a USDA study that found watermelon stored at room temperature (70F) actually has more nutrients when compared to melons stored at refrigerator temps (41F).  Second Doug discusses a Danish study that found Inuits living a traditional lifestyle of eating fish and seal had lower blood pressure, lower levels of blood triacylglyerol and less insulin resistance.

Dr. Wallach discusses a recent news story regarding processed meats.  A review of 15 studies found that consumption of processed meats increases the risk of stomach cancer by 15%-38%.  Dr. Wallach has been warning people for years that processed meats such as; lunch meats, sausages, ham, bacon etc. are not good for the health of the human body.

Doug and Dr. Wallach discuss a couple of news stories.  The first concerns a story about clinical drug trials and the lack of volunteers.  There are currently over 400 cancer drug trials in progress but there aren't enough volunteers for several of  the trials.  Doug also mentions a news story concerning the antioxidant qualities of blue berries.  In fact the news story states that wild blue berries have nearly one and a half the antioxidant capacity as cultivated blue berries.  The article also states that the National Cancer Institute has long known that antioxidants may slow and possibly prevent many cancers.  Doug asks the question "if this is known then why do we need another 400 drugs"?

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show by discussing a research study concern the role of sugar and tumors.  The research found a direct correlation between sugar consumption tumor growth.  Ben expands by outlining many of the destructive effects of sugar consumption.

Doug and Pharmacist Ben discuss a recent news story concerning skin cancer.  The World Health Organization issued a report that found as many as 60,000 people die annually from skin cancer.  Dr. Maria Neira, Director for Public Health and the Environment for WHO advises avoiding the sun and using sun screen.  Ben disagrees outlining the various reason for sun exposure such as vitamin D production.
