Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach. Ben discusses the increase of diabetes in the U.S. double from what it was in the 1970's. Outlining some of the newly developed drugs to treat the disease. Asserting that these drugs aren't necessary because type II diabetes can be controlled through diet and exercise.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug and Ben continue discussing the diet aspect of controlling diabetes. Ben had previously stated the importance of staying away from grains in the diet of a type II diabetic.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Nurse Joanne starts the show discussing an article about the importance of enough daily servings of fruits and vegatables.  The article goes on to say that most Americans don't eat enough but that powdered fruit and vegatable supplements were beneficial for promoting good health.

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.  The researchers found that eating one ounce of walnuts daily helped to reduce inflammation and oxidation in arteries.  They also found the walnuts when compared to olive oil helped to preserve the elasticity and flexibility of the arteries.

Dr. Wallach starts the show giving an advisory regarding new E-coli contaminations in lettuce.  Doc discusses the death of Australian Olympic medalist Peter Norman.  Outlining the fact that athletes rarely live to be 100 and often don't live as long as coach potatoes.  Asserting that this is because while they are sweating during training and their respective events the sweat is a nutrient rich soup.  If these nutrients aren't replaced the athlete is at risk of getting diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss several news stories.  The first two concern health practioners who are in trouble with the law.  One concerning a dentist who over dosed a 5 year old girl and she died.  Second they discuss a doctor in Spain who was sexually abusing some of his patients.  The third story concerns a study done at UCLA that found some peoples brains can have side effects from chemotherapy that last as long as 10 years.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben asserts that cancers is one of the biggest killers of Americans each year.  Outlining that the major cause of cancer is the toxins in and around our bodies.  Ben details the ways the human body detoxifies using various nutrients.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a recent news article regarding folate and folic acid.  The article outlines how the FDA mandated folic acid enriched grains in 1998 in an effort to reduce neural tube defects in infants.  The result was a 20-30% drop in neural tube defects.  However the end goal was to have at least 50% of childbearing age women taking 400 micrograms per day.  A recent research indicates that goal has not been met.  With most women in all groups taking only somewhere around 100 micrograms daily.

Doug Winfrey and Joanne discussed a recent news study concerning the cleanliness of hotel rooms.  The study had people with rhinovirus stay in hotel rooms.  After spending the night several objects in the room were tested.  The study found that about 30% of items were contaminated.

Pharmacist Ben Fuchs fills in for Dr. Wallach.  Ben starts the show discussing a recent report that indicates the trace mineral chromium may reduce the effects of depression.  Ben also discusses recent research that has found vitamin D has anti-viral qualities and may help to prevent the flu.

Doug Winfrey and Ben Fuchs discuss a news article regarding a survey from the National Foundation for Infectious Disease.  The survey found that 48% of those surveyed are not planning on getting a flu vaccine.  The survey indicated that most of those surveyed thought that the vaccine can actually cause the flu.  The article points out that the vaccine is made from a dead virus and cannot give people the flu.  Howvever, Ben points out other negatives associated with the vaccine such as cancers and mercury toxicitiy.

Nurse Joanne Conaway fill in for Dr. Wallach.  Joanne discusses a recent research study that looked at sugar consumption and correlations to mental illness.  The Norwegian study found that teens who consumed the greatest amounts of sugary drinks had a higher percentage of mental illnesses.  She also discussed a study that found teens who drank high amounts of sodas increased their risk of bone fractures by as much as 300%.

Pearls of Wisdom

Doug Winfrey and Joanne Conaway discuss a recent study that found 75% of adults in the U.S. are sleep deprived.   Increasing their risk for decreased appetite, weight gain, diabetes, lowered immune system and even depression.  Another study also found that 1 in 6 adults have trouble falling asleep and 4.5% of those use either herbal remedies or relaxation techniques to solve their sleep troubles.
