Local wildlife experts are seeing increasing numbers of mal-nourished pelicans on area beaches. However, the dying birds are not believed to have been sickened, but are likely facing increased competition, as the population of the California brown pelican rebounds. The phenomenon might also be attributed to ocean currents that have pushed the birds’ food further out to sea. Wildlife officials urge central coast residents to leave sickened pelicans alone.
