In an effort to mitigate flood risk on the Pajaro River Flood Plain, federal state and county officials have signed a design agreement so the levee system can be re-designed and enlarged. The hope is that a more resilient Pajaro River Levee System will be created and constructed. More than 60 percent of this $7.1 million design phase will be paid for by the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers, while the rest of the money will be locally sourced….and then reimbursed by the state.
The currently under-sized levee system was finalized back in 1949, and needs to be rebuilt….so while that’s being done, the plan is to enlarge and re-design the system, so it will work better during heavy rainfall events in the future. The entire Pajaro River Flood Management Project is currently estimated to cost $400 million.
