October 12, 2015: State Bill Bans Use of ‘Redskins’ as Mascot

(07:40) SACRAMENTO – Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill that would prevent schools from using a racial slur as a mascot. AB 30, authored by Assemblyman Luis Alejo, bans public schools from using the term ‘Redskins’ as a school or athletic team name, mascot, or nickname. The word is widely regarded as a disparaging term for the Native American community. Four schools in California currently have teams called the Redskins. The new law will go into effect in 2017.
