Hundreds of u.c. santa cruz students protested in downtown santa cruz yesterday afternoon. The crowd of an estimated 5-hundred students was demonstrating against tuition hikes at the u.c. system. The 4 p.m. protest was billed as “occupy education, UCSC,” and student demonstrators reportedly wanted to show solidarity with the greater “occupy” movement. Portions of pacific avenue, front street, and center street were closed down by the marchers. No injuries or arrests were reported in the demonstration. U.C. Regents have made several tuition hikes over the past few years, including a 17-percent increase this summer, with another 30-percent increase being proposed.
