In a controversial move, the North Monterey County Unified School District last night decided to lay-off at least 15 staff members for the next school year.
Parents and students appeared to speak against the proposal, which includes the loss of five school-based mental health counselors, two managers, and a public information officer position.
The district blames the cuts on a budget deficit. Parents and students said they plan to continue protesting the decision, particularly the loss of the five counselors who help students with mental health issues.
