No Touch Crossing 1.04.2021 0655 3 JS

Contact-free crosswalk guards have been introduced in Monterey County as part of a pilot program.

The new touchless pedestrian buttons have been recently added to North Fremont Street in Monterey.

They are designed to not only reduce exposure to high-touch surfaces, but to accommodate those who have mobility limitations making them unable to activate a crosswalk.

The new pedestrian buttons can be activated by waving in front of the sensor, cost $450 each, and can replace traditional buttons for crosswalks.

This project is funded by the Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s Regional Surface Transportation grants and could expand to additional crossings in the future.
