“Downtown Santa Cruz, no Halloween this year.” That’s the word from police chief Andy Mills. The celebration was cancelled last month while the city was in a more restrictive tier. At that time, the city cancelled trick or treating in downtown and the business association encouraged businesses to not hand out candy.
The annual event can attract thousands to the downtown area in which the city blocks off streets and a Do It Yourself parade is held.
Downtown will still be open Halloween night and people are encouraged to go down to shop and eat, but the police chief urges people to not stick around.
Police will be out in force to make sure people are following COVID safety guidelines.
With the city not sponsoring a Halloween celebration, the hope is to prevent a “super spreader event” from materializing.
