Gov. Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order that will phase out sales of new gasoline-powered passenger cars by 2035. Newsom said the move will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
Today’s announcement comes about two weeks after Newsom promised to fast-track California’s environmental goals. This summer’s wildland fires have been one of the most disastrous climate events in California history. The state is still battling wildfires that have burned a record 3.6 million acres in 2020.
