Some  small  businesses  in  Santa  Cruz  county  will be  able  to  get  money  to  keep  their  doors  open  soon.   That’s  because  Santa  Cruz  county  will  be  receiving  a  2.75  million  dollar  grant.   The  CARES  Act money  is  granting  the  funds  to  the  Covid-19  Recovery  And  Resiliency  Program.

Low-income  renters  in  all  cities,  and  in  the  unincorporated  areas,  of  Santa  Cruz  county  will  be  able  to  tap  into  more  than  $16  million  when  a  new  rent  relief  program  launches  next  month.    That’s  because  Santa  Cruz  county  supervisors  voted  unanimously  today  to  join  a  state  rent  relief  program.   The  money  can  be  used  to  pay  rent and  utility  bills  for  local  renters  unable  to  because  of the  Covid-19  pandemic.   Applications  will  be  available  on the state’s  website  called:  HousingIsKey.com

UPDATE – Sal Shooting 02-23-21 11:02 S.S.

Last  week’s  shooting  in  the  parking  lot  of  the Denny’s  restaurant  on  North  Main  Street  in  Salinas  (that  left  2  people  injured)  is  still  being  investigated.   The  44  year-old  driver  suffered  critical  gunshot  wounds,  his  front  seat  passenger  suffered  minor  wounds,  and  the  9  year-old  boy  in  the  back  seat  was  not  hit  by  the  gunfire.    The  gunman  in  the  10  p.m.  shooting  is  described  only  as  being  of  medium  build  and  wearing  dark  clothing  with  black  and  white  tennis  shoes.    Anyone  with  information  on  this  shooting  is  encouraged  to  contact  the  Salinas  Police  Department.

Prescribed Burn Workshops 02-23-21 09:42 S.S.

Three  workshops,   to  teach  participants  about Prescribed  Burns  and  wildland  firefighting,    are  coming  up  in  April.   Some  skills  that participants  will  learn  include:   fire  line construction,    fire  line  communication,    prescribed fire  starting,   how  to  use  a  firefighting  pump   and  how  to  install  a  hose.    More  information  on  these  workshops,  that are  scheduled  to  be  held  in  Davenport,  Carmel  And  Paicines,  can  be  found  on-line  at:  ucanr.edu

Last Night’s Virtual Town Hall 02-23-21 08:41 S.S.

A  virtual  town  hall  was  held  last  night  so  that  Pajaro  Valley  Unified  School  District  officials  could  assure  parents  and  seniors  that  the  Covid-19  vaccine  is  safe.    That  was  in  an  effort  to  encourage  people  who  are  65  years-old  and  older  to  get the  shot....and  not  just  wait  until  all  of  their  family  can  get  vaccinated.    The  Santa  Cruz  County  Office  Of  Education  plans  to  hold  a  similar  virtual  town  hall  meeting  this  Thursday  on  behalf  of  all  10  school  districts  in  the  county.   

 

Thursday’s  meeting  is  slated  to  begin  at  5  p.m.
