MIS-C Cases Increase in Children 02-25-21 16:43 DC

Following an increase in COVID-19 cases in early January, local doctors are now seeing an increase in another disease in children.

Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome in children, also called MIS-C, causes different parts of the body to be inflamed. New state data shows there are 302 reported cases of MIS-C statewide. That’s up from 176 cases in January and 157 in December.

Dr. Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Children’s Hospital said that there have been reports of children dying from it. There have also been reports of children having to have their arms or legs amputated, and it can affect the heart very severely, Dr. Bumberg said.

SC Home Rebuilding Remains Slow 02-25-21 15:44 DC

More than 900 Santa Cruz County homes were destroyed during the CZU Fires last fall. Many former residents remain out of their homes today.

Santa Cruz County Spokesperson Jason Hoppin says construction crews continue in their efforts to rebuild in many mountainous burn areas, including Boulder Creek and Davenport. But the workers say a lack of water and power is causing delays in the rebuilding process for many displaced residents.

Some construction crews say they are overwhelmed by the demand for their work in the burned areas.

New Vaccines for Teachers Plan 02-25-21 15:27 DC

California released a new plan today (Thursday) outlining how the state will allocate vaccines to education workers. That, as Gov. Gavin Newsom continues to push to reopen more schools to in-person instruction.

The governor announced last week that at least 10% of the state’s vaccines would go to education workers starting in March, which translates to roughly 75,000 dedicated doses a week.

Today (On Thursday,) his office released an overview showing how those vaccines would be distributed. Each week, the state will provide 75,000 doses to county offices of education for distribution. Teachers and other education workers will get single-use codes to make expedited appointments online.

If that many vaccines do come through, it could be a matter of weeks for California’s 320,000 K-12 public school teachers to be inoculated.

Highway 1 To Be Repaired 02-25-21 11:21 S.S.

Starting  on  Monday,  Cal-Trans  crews  will  be  working  to  fill  the  gap  at  Rat  Creek  so  they  can  re-build  the  Highway 1 south  of  Big  Sur.    That  after  the  January  29th  storm  led  to  debris  flow  from  the  Dolan  Fire  washing  out  a  150  section  of  the  coastal  highway.   Officials  estimate  that  Highway  1  in  that  area  will  re-open  to  travelers  early  this summer.   This  “enhanced fill” option also involves replacing the main drainage system at rat creek with an over-sized main culvert, a secondary culvert, and several smaller overflow culverts closer to the highway grade.   The  redundancies are  designed to help  the  highway  withstand future debris flows, and enhance the resiliency and sustainability of the highway against coastal erosion.
