The Seniors Council of Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties is offering free tax preparation to local seniors, people with disabilities and low-income residents.
To get help, residents should email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. In the subject line, include your full name, city of residence and if you are aged 60 or older. In the body, you are asked to write a short description of what you need and income level. If you qualify, a volunteer will reach out.
Residents can also call 831-724-2606. In the message, you are asked to include your full name, age, city of residence and 2020 income.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said at a Wednesday news conference that he is considering a including vaccination rates into requirements for moving between tiers of California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy.
Newsom said the proposal would not end the purple, or widespread, tier, but he expects that it will allow counties to move into less restrictive tiers faster.
The Governor said more information will be released at a later time.

High school football and other outdoor sports are cleared to play in Monterey and San Benito County. They join Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties which received approval on February 23rd.
The state of California requires counties to have a COVID-19 case rate at or below 14 people per 100,000 residents. Yesterday (On Tuesday), both San Benito and Monterey County hit that mark, with case rates of 10.0.
Tuesday's COVID-19 results allow local schools to begin practicing football and other outdoor sports like baseball, beach volleyball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and water polo.

Football games will begin over the next week. Santa Cruz County schools will only play opponents within the county. Monterey Peninsula Unified School District has canceled the football season for Marina, Monterey, and Seaside high schools. Salinas Union High School District will play primarily in-district opponents, with the exception of one game between Salinas High School and Palma.
The state requires that all football coaches and players undergo weekly COVID-19 testing. Test results must be available within 24 hours of competition. Gov. Gavin Newsom says that the state will pay for the tests.

An arson suspect has been arrested in Santa Cruz county. 39 year-old Tanya A. Posey is believed to have set at least 5 fires in the Felton area this year. She remains in Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of her 50,000 bond. Anyone with information about said fires, or Posey herself, is encouraged to contact the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office.
