Congressman Panetta, Senators Feinstein and Padilla Lead Call for Year-Round Wildland Fire Workforce 03-31-21 15:43 DC

Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) along with Senators Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla and Representatives Zoe Lofgren (CA-52) and Scott Peters (CA-52) are leading their California colleagues in a letter urging the Biden Administration to transition to a year-round federal firefighting workforce.

“As we have seen firsthand on the central coast of California, wildfire seasons, unfortunately, are turning into wildfire years,” said Congressman Panetta. “My colleagues and I are trying to stay ahead of that issue with the creation of a year-round federal firefighting workforce. Such perennial and critical firefighters will bring stability, consistency, and reliability to the efforts to not just suppress but also prevent wildfires.

In addition to Feinstein, Padilla, Lofgren, Peter s, and Panetta, the letter was also signed by 18 California members of congress.

Local Counties, Orgs Receive $25.46 Mil Fed Health Funding 03-321 15:01 DC

Today, Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) announced that Santa Cruz County and Monterey County, as well as community health centers across the Central Coast, will receive $25.46 million in federal funding through the Amer ican Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

The funding will help counties and community health centers prevent, mitigate, and respond to COVID-19 and enhance healthcare services and infrastructure. ARPA includes $6.1 billion in public health funding for counties and community health centers experiencing the greatest need during the pandemic.

The following health centers and counties will receive funding:

  • Salud Para La Gente; Watsonville- $5,081,375
  • Clinica De Salud Del Valle De Salinas; Salinas- $7,992,750
  • San Benito Health Foundation; Hollister- $1,603,750
  • County of Monterey - $7,369,500
  • County of Santa Cruz- $3,413,375

Harry Berger, Jr – Obit 03-31-21 10:00 S.S.

A founding faculty member of Cowell College at U.C.S.C. has died. 96 year-old Harry Berger Junior helped get U.C.S.C.’s English Department off the ground back in the mid-1960s. Although he officially “retired” from the university in 1994 (at the age of 70), he kept teaching and lecturing until he was in his 90s....winning numerous awards and honors with his teaching style and writings. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, siblings, and his 2 sons; and is survived by his 2nd wife, daughter s and his grandson. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

MONTEREY MAN ARR 03-31-21A 0834 S.S.

A 56 year-old Monterey man has been arrested in connection with several Saturday burglaries. He was arrested while driving a tractor on Municipal Wharf number 2, while he was under the influence of narcotics. Joseph Bollom, who was already on parole for burglary and attempted escape, was found to be in possession of a variety of items taken during burglaries on March 2nd. Additionally, Bollom was reportedly living in a Robinson Street home illegally.
