The artist known as the “Painter of Light”, was arrested Friday night in Carmel on a DUI charge. 52-year old Thomas Kinkade was pulled over around 9:18 p.m. at 15th and Monte Verde Streets where he was taken into custody for driving under the influence. Kinkade was booked into Monterey County Jail and was released Saturday morning. Kinkade is known for using paintings with glowing highlights and saturated pastel colors.
An 18-year old had to be rescued by the Fire Department after being badly beaten last night on a Santa Cruz beach. Witnesses called 9-1-1 after a man got into a fight with a group of men on a beach near West Cliff Drive and Fair Avenue around 11:45 p.m.. Firefighters took about 45 minutes to reach the teen and secure him in a rescue basket that was hoisted up a 35-foot cliff to the street. The teen, a Santa Cruz resident, who had sustained a head injury after being hit with an unknown object, was taken to Dominican Hospital.
A Seaside based program has been awarded $10,000 to allow Marine biologists to continue teaching students about the importance of saving marine mammals. The grant awarded to “Save the Whales” will enable the hands on program “Whales on Wheels” to be brought to schools in MontereySanta Cruz counties. Some of the classroom programs offered by and Save the Whales include The Land and Sea Watershed Model; Sea Otters: A Story of Survival; Endangered Species and Whale of a Rhythm Program.
A new pilot program in Watsonville will now ensure that newborns will be given access to a pediatrician and medical insurance. The new program, known as “Baby Gateway”, starts the minute the baby is born with an adviser from Salud Para La Gente talking with the family to determine their eligibility with Medical, along with helping them choose an assigned primary physician for the new infant. Baby Gateway is also expected to provide a crash course for parents on how to take care of an infant, including what signs indicate the child needs to be seen by a doctor or be admitted to the emergency room.
5.8 acres of land was donated to Monterey County to help build a new park in Pajaro. The property at 24 San Juan Road, was initially used by the company from 1940 through the 1990s as a construction equipment, repair and storage yard. Pajaro residents have been involved in the park’s design and features. The park is expected to include soccer and baseball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, a covered bandstand, infant and children’s playgrounds, walking and running tracks, an art wall and a historic exhibit. Construction is slated to begin in October.
