Prunedale 101 project 08/18/10 0800 E.A.

A stretch of Highway 101 known for numerous fatal accidents is scheduled for a nearly 100-million dollar improvement project. The California Transportation Commission unanimously approved the funding to improve the section of Highway 101 that runs through the Prunedale area. The project calls for two new interchanges, an overpass, and a median barrier. Officials are saying the Prunedale Improvement Project is the largest such project in regional history. Construction is expected to begin in April.

SALINAS'S NEW CRIME CAMPAIGN 08-18-10 08:00 a.v.

A new business campaign, launched by Salinas’s Salvation Army is an effort to help residents fight gang violence in the city.   The new program titled “I’ll Fight”, calls for businesses in Salinas to become safety hubs that assist witnesses and victims of crimes from gang-related assaults to domestic violence.   The campaign, in collaboration with the Alisal Rotary, will run from October through Easter Sunday.  A campaign logo will be displayed inside the business storefront identifying the business as a ‘safety mission spot’ where people can find protection and information.

SALINAS’S NEW SCHOOL SAFETY PROGRAM 08-18-10 07:00 a.v.

A new program designed to help children get to school safely is being launched in Salinas. The Salinas Streets Smarts Program was launched this year in an effort to remind motorists to drive cautiously while students are back in school. Participants at John Steinbeck Elementary School have created lawn signs around their school with a message that reads “If you see kids…..SLOW DOWN”.

15th SENATE DISTRICT - unofficial election results - 08/18/10 04:55 S.S.

THE  UNOFFICIAL  RESULTS,   OF  YESTERDAY’S  RUN-OFF  ELECTION  (IN  THE  15TH SENATE  DISTRICT)  ARE  IN.  REPUBLICAN  SAM  BLAKESLEE APPEARS  TO HAVE  WON  (WITH  48.8  PERCENT OF  THE  VOTE),   WHILE  DEMOCRAT  JOHN  LAIRD RECEIVED  44.1  PERCENT.    INDEPENDENT  JIM  FITZGERALD GOT  5.1  PERCENT,   AND  LIBERTARIAN  MARK  HINKLE PICKED  UP  THE  REMAINING  2.0  PERCENT.    THIS  SPECIAL  ELECTION  WAS  HELD  TO  FILL  THE  SEAT  VACATED  BY  ABEL  MALDONADO,  (WHEN  HE  WAS  APPOINTED  LIEUTENANT  GOVERNOR  OF  CALIFORNIA).   

THE  15TH  DISTRICT  SENATOR  REPRESENTS  PORTIONS  OF  SANTA  CLARA,  SANTA  CRUZ,  MONTEREY,  SAN  LUIS  OBISPO,  AND  SANTA  BARBARA  COUNTIES.

SLEEPING BAN ARREST/CITATIONS 08-17-10 19:00 a.v.

5 people, including a child molester, were arrested and 10 others were cited this week during a sleeping ban protest in Santa Cruz. 3 people were arrested under the state’s anti-lodging law, another person was arrested for public intoxication, and 29-year old convicted child molester and local transient Mark Greer was arrested Tuesday for violating the state’s lodging law during an ongoing demonstration on the Santa Cruz city hall lawn. Protesters with Peace Camp 2010, have been demonstrating since July 4th. The group is calling for an end to the city ordinance that prohibits camping outside between 11 p.m. and 8:30 a.m.
