KERN AND CONTRA COSTA COUNTY FIRES 08-25-10 06:00 a.v.

Several fires broke out yesterday in the hills of California stretching from north to south due to high temperatures and dry brush. In Kern County, a wildfire, known as the “Post Fire” is burning out of control in the northwest area of Los Angeles, West of Highway I-5. Over 1,300 acres have burned since it was 1st reported at 12:15 p.m. yesterday, right now 40 to 50 structures are being threatened. About 500 firefighters are on scene from multiple agencies, and an evacuation order that was in place yesterday, has been lifted.

In Contra Costa County, the “Curry Fire”, also broke out yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m. between Clayton and Black Hawk on Curry Canyon Road and Morgan Territory Road. The fire is 80-percent contained and has burned 375 acres. No structures are being threatened and no injuries have been reported in either fire.

LAS LOMAS GANG-RELATED ARREST 08-25-10 05:40 a.v.

3 teens were arrested yesterday after search warrants were served at 2 Las Lomas residences. 19-year old Lucas Moreno Pena, and 18-year olds Jose Israel Medina and Vincent Pena were booked into Monterey County Jail on multiple charges in connection with a gang-related shooting earlier this month in North Monterey County. The warrants were served at the homes on Miller Road and Las Lomas Drive around 7 a.m. where officers also seized 11 weapons, cocaine, methamphetamine and gang paraphernalia.

SALINAS APPROVES ANTI-GANG CENTER 08-25-10 05:20 a.v.

After a unanimous vote yesterday, the city of Salinas will now host an anti-gang operation center in hopes of decreasing the area’s gang activity. The headquarters will be shared with county, state and federal law enforcement partners which include, among several, the Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force, the F-B-I, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Immigrations Customs Enforcement, the California Department of Justice Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, the Bureau of Alcohol, and Tobacco and Firearms. The F-B-I is expected to cover the full cost of rent and utilities for the Center.

NO MORE HANDS FREE NOZZLES 08-24-10 18:50 a.v.

About 3,000 gas stations across the state are being ordered to remove the “hands free” latches on gas nozzles due to mal-function issues. The state fire marshal ordered about a third of all the stations in the state to remove the “hold-open” latches, on at least 13-gas nozzles manufactured by Vapor System Technologies after people suffered minor injuries from gasoline spills. Station owners have until October 15 to have the latches removed. The manufacturer meanwhile is working on developing a new nozzle to replace the old ones.

S.C. MAN FINISHES MONTEREY BAY SWIM 08-24-10 18:50 a.v.

A Santa Cruz native made history today by becoming the 2nd person to swim across the Monterey Bay. Marathon swimmer and ocean advocate, Bruckner Chase completed the swim after starting at Santa Cruz Main Beach at 4:20 a.m. this morning then reaching San Carlos Beach in Monterey at about 6:12 p.m. Chase said the swim is an effort to bring attention to the state of our oceans and the work being done by the National Marine Sanctuaries and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Chase said too many Jellyfish forced him to put on a wetsuit this year, and the reason behind why he was forced to stop the same swim last year.
