A PAROLEE WAS FOUND AROUND NOON TODAY IN SALINAS. 23 YEAR-OLD IRWING GONZALES WAS FOUND HIDING IN A GARBAGE CAN ON BRADBURY. THAT AFTER HE RAN FROM A TRAFFIC STOP NEAR ROCKHAVEN COURT JUST AFTER 10:30 THIS MORNING.
GONZALES AND 24 YEAR-OLD LUIS RESTO (A 2ND PASSENGER IN THAT VEHICLE, WHO IS ALSO A PAROLEE) WERE BOTH BOOKED INTO MONTEREY COUNTY JAIL.
The Federal Aviation Administration has issued Grants to local airports for safety improvements. Congressman Sam Farr, who announced the grant recipients Friday, believes that a smooth transportation system is vital to our economic growth, and the grants will improve and extend the life of our local airports. The Monterey Peninsula Airport is slated to receive $2,361,413 to improve runway safety, which will include building a retaining wall and access road, the Salinas Municipal Airport is slated to receive $2,115,000 to reconstruct a taxiway, meanwhile the Mesa Del Rey Airport is set to receive $484,750 while the Watsonville Municipal Airport was honored with $52,250, and $30,000 will be awarded to the Hollister Municipal Airport.
Starting this week, Fremont Peak State Park will reopen 7-days a week in an effort to reduce vandalism and trespassing. The park has been closed to the public Mondays and Wednesdays in an effort to comply with state budget cuts. However, the Superintendent with Gavilan Sector Parks says the decision to open the park on those days was due to increased trespassing and vandalism, such as spray painting and breaking property, in the past 2 months. The goal of reduced days had been to cut down on staff load.
Construction work to upgrade Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is tentatively slated to begin this fall. The plan calls for making the trail wheelchair accessible to the Bird Island Overlook, and is expected to cost $500,000 to build. Parks officials say the November 15th start date for the renovation depends on if the state budget is signed by then, since the majority of the funding for the remodel, will come from state coffers.
Santa Cruz police have announced 1-arrest was made last week, as part of month-long investigation into drug sales. The investigation was conducted with Federal D.E.A. resources, along with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Authorities served warrants at multiple locations in and around Santa Cruz on Friday, and arrested 31-year-old Benito Zambrano. He is accused of possessing just under a kilogram of cocaine for sale, along with packaging material, and 14-hundred dollars in cash. The investigation is on-going, and police believe Zambrano is involved in a high-level network of drug distribution.
