A 62 YEAR-OLD WATSONVILLE MAN DIED EARLY THIS MORNING IN A SOLO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT ON SOUTHBOUND HIGHWAY 101 BETWEEN HIGHWAY’S 25 AND 129. THIS MORNING’S 1 A.M. ACCIDENT OCCURRED NOT FAR FROM LAST FRIDAY MORNING’S FATAL CRASH ON 101 NEAR BETABEL Y ROAD. WHILE LAST FRIDAY’S FATAL ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY 101 CAUSED AUTHORITIES TO CLOSE LANES OF HIGHWAY 101 FOR MORE THAN 10 HOURS, THIS MORNING’S FATAL ACCIDENT WAS OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND IS HAVING MUCH LESS OF AN IMPACT ON TRAFFIC.

A 2 year-old Castroville girl was airlifted to a bay area trauma center. That after she ran out into Speegle Street and was hit by a car. The 34 year-old driver said he tried to swerve to avoid hitting the little girl, but ended up hitting her and then running his s.u.v. into a parked car there too. The driver was also hospitalized with various injuries.

A Salinas bargain market is expected to begin operating in the Santa Cruz County area by this fall. The owners of Grocery Outlet are planning on expanding their business to include Watsonville, and are currently remodeling a former grocery store on the corner of Main Street and Auto Center Drive to house the new market. Owners of the new discount merchandise store are expected to hire up to 40 people, and begin operating by the end of October.

A Santa Cruz man was taken into custody after chasing 2 people with a knife yesterday. 31-year old Adam Roberts was charged with brandishing a weapon, making criminal threats and resisting arrest after he chased a 39-year old man and a 27-year old woman in the West Cliff Drive and John Street area just after 5:30 p.m. Santa Cruz police officers arrived on the scene when Roberts fled in his truck for a block, jumped out of the vehicle then led officers on a foot pursuit where he was arrested and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.
