S.C. PILOT SECURITY PROGRAM BEGINS 09-02-10 21:50 a.v.

Private Security officers will begin patrolling downtown Santa Cruz this weekend as part of a pilot program to help boost security.   The program, which starts Saturday, includes 3 First Alarm security guards monitoring Pacific Avenue during the morning and early afternoon.  The officers, who won’t be authorized to carry guns, will be trained by Santa Cruz Police Department officers in municipal ordinances, and will utilize the police dispatch system to report problems as soon as they occur.  Police officials believe the new program will allow officers to concentrate on crime in other areas of the city.

WATSONVILLE’S FLY-IN AND AIR SHOW 09-02-10 20:00 a.v.

Watsonville’s 46th annual Fly-in and Air Show roars into town this weekend. The Air Show, which starts tomorrow night, features the tactical maneuvers of 2 F-18 Super Hornets on Saturday and Sunday, and Marines will demonstrate vertical takeoffs and landings with the A-V-8-B Harrier. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 fior children, and free for children under 6. Visit www.watsonvilleairshow.org for more information.

MISSING WATSONVILLE BOY FOUND SAFE 09-02-10 19:30 a.v.

A 9-year old boy was found safe and unharmed this morning after being reported missing this week. A massive search was launched after the child was last seen 8 a.m. Wednesday morning. Authorities discovered the boy had gone with his 13-year old cousin to his uncle’s Pajaro home. Police say this is a good reminder for parents that if a child brings a friend home to stay the night, to check in with the visiting child’s family to make sure that everyone is on the same page.

SALINAS ATTORNEY’S DEATH/ SUSPICIOUS 09-02-10 19:20 a.v.

The death of a Salinas attorney is being investigated as suspicious in nature after he was found dead inside his home yesterday afternoon. Police were following up on a welfare check for 58-year old Mark Hafen at his home on the 700 block of Carmelita Drive after coworkers reported him missing to authorities. Detectives are said to be investigating and treating Hafen’s death as suspicious.

S.V. APPROVES RECOVERY ZONE 09-02-10 18:30 a.v.

A resolution was unanimously approved yesterday by Scotts Valley city leaders that establishes a certain business section of the city as a recovery zone. The city’s redevelopment project area on Mount Hermon Road and Scotts Valley Drive, would serve as the recovery zone, which would allow the city to apply for a recovery zone bond, which is designed to pay for infrastructure and construction projects as well as job training and educational programs.
