S.C. TOWN HALL MTG HOSTED BY FARR 09-03-10 08:00 a.v.

Santa Cruz residents raised concerns over economic issues last night when Congressman Sam Farr hosted a town hall meeting. Nearly 80 people attended the forum at the 1st Congregational Church on High Street to voice their concerns including funding for special education and pensions and benefits for in-home health care providers. Several in-home health care providers say that the financial support for providers is inadequate, claiming that they do not receive pension and overtime pay, sick leave, or vacation time. Farr encouraged residents to petition their local state assembly member for help.

S.C. FOOD/LIQUOR STORE LOSES LIQUOR LICENSE 09-03-10 07:30 a.v.

A Santa Cruz food and liquor store lost it’s liquor license after alcoholic beverages were sold to minors several times in the past 6 months. The liquor license for Ernie’s Food and Liquor on the 900 block of Soquel Avenue, has been suspended for 30 days, but will remain inactive until the license is sold to another owner. The store, meanwhile, will continue selling groceries and other items.

SALINAS HWY 101 HELICOPTER CRASH 09-03-10 07:00 a.v.

A portion of southbound Highway 101 in Salinas has been shut down this morning while emergency crews work to clear the wreckage of a helicopter crash. Police say the ag helicopter went down at 6:10 a.m., a mile south of Airport Boulevard, impacting highway 101 southbound traffic only. Police have shut the road down in that area and are now diverting traffic onto side streets, while officers work to clean-up fuel and water that was spilled in the crash. The helicopter pilot has been taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

ARREST IN SALINAS ATTORNEY’S DEATH 09-03-10 06:00 a.v.

Police have arrested the girlfriend of a local Salinas attorney. 42-year old Virginia Turner was arrested and booked into Monterey County Jail on homicide charges. 58-year old Mark Hafen was found dead at his home on the 700 block of Carmelita Drive after coworkers reported him missing to authorities. Police said the investigation into the cause of Hafen’s death showed that he possibly died of head trauma, the case is being investigated as a homicide.

FDA VISITS THE CENTRAL COAST 09-02-10 22:30 a.v.

The commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will be in the Central Coast area tomorrow morning in an effort to help promote food safety. FDA Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg will visit Santa Paz Farms at Foster and Davis Roads in Salinas at 8:20 a.m. The tour includes a demonstration of strawberry harvest techniques, technologies and practices employed to ensure food safety and an opportunity for discussion.
