A man was arrested in Santa Cruz last night after a probation check was conducted. 22-year old Aurelio Morales was found in possession of about 7-ounces of marijuana and other evidence of drug sales when investigators were performing a routine visit to see if Morales was complying with his probation terms. Morales, who was on probation for a drug-related offense, was taken into custody on the 1000 block of Morrissey Boulevard.

A Salinas father has been charged with one felony count of improperly storing a firearm after his 6-year old son accidentally shot himself in August. Edward Camacho is set to be arraigned on the charge on October 28th and faces up to 3 year in prison if convicted. The boy, who got a hold of his father’s gun and was playing with it when it went off, remains in a Bay Area Hospital in critical condition.

Wetsuit legend and Santa Cruz local, Jack O’Neill, is set to appear in an upcoming advertising campaign from the California Travel and Tourism Commission to draw visitors to the Golden State. The international print advertising campaign, called “True Californians” will be shot in Santa Cruz tomorrow. Other “True Californians” to be featured in the campaign include pioneer of extreme skiing Glen Plake, and innovator of urban street food, Roy Choi. The multi-million dollar campaign will run in lifestyle magazines in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. beginning later this year.

A Salinas Community Service Officer was taken into custody this week on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor. Police say 28-year old Scott Callan was arrested last night and was booked into Monterey County Jail on 5-counts of intercourse with a victim under the age of 15, 1-count of sodomy, and 1-count of oral copulation. Callan, who had been an employee with the Salinas Police Department since July 2001, was an advisor with the Department’s youth program. The victim had been involved in the Explorer program conducted at the police department designed to educate those between the ages of 14 and 21 about police work and the criminal justice system. Callan’s bail has been set at 75-thousand dollars, and has been placed on administrative leave.
