FORMER FORT ORD BURN – UPDATED 3 10-08-10 10:00 a.v.

A prescribed burn at the former Fort Ord on the Monterey Peninsula, was ignited today for a 2nd consecutive day. The 167 acre burn began at Burn Unit 15 at 8:15 a.m. this morning, and is expected to last 2 hours. The burns are being conducted to remove unexploded munitions and explosives from the area. A prescribed burn of 110 acres was also conducted yesterday at Burn Unit 21.

Salinas Homicide Arrest 10/08/10 0830 E.A.

Two have been arrested in connection with a Salinas homicide. 19-year-old Jesse Estrada Diaz and a 15-year-old juvenile were arrested Thursday after 3 search warrants were served in regards to the murder of Jaime Esteban earlier this month. Diaz was booked into Monterey County Jail and the juvenile was booked into Juvenile Hall.

A study is being conducted by Monterey-Salinas Transit regarding several Monterey County communities. Meetings are scheduled for this month in Greenfield, Soledad, Gonzales, and King City. The study will evaluate how well bus and shuttle services are meeting passenger desires. Meetings are slated for October 11th and 12th.. Watsonville Plaza Name Change 10/08/10 0700 E.A.

A proposal to change the name of Watsonville Plaza has been withdrawn. Watsonville Mayor Luis Alejo proposed changing the name to Delores Huerta Plaza, but has taken that proposal off the table in the face of strong community opposition. Another location to be named in honor of Delores Huerta is currently being considered.

CA. PASSES MAIN BUDGET BILL 10-08-10 08:00 a.v.

he State Senate ended a 100th day budget impasse today by passing a main budget bill within a legislative package. California lawmakers reportedly worked through the night reaching an agreement just hours ago. The Senate’s vote comes more than 3 months after the start of the fiscal year, as the state was preparing to issue I-O-Us to state contractors. The Senate’s approval came hours after the Assembly acted yesterday. The 87.5 billion dollar general fund spending plan is nearly 16-billion dollars less than the general fund just 3 years ago.
