A Texas man has been arrested on murder charges after a 41-year old cold case, involving the death of a Seaside High School graduate, has been resolved. James Terry Mason was arrested October 7th in connection with the killing of Christian Lopes, who was 19-years of age when he died during a fight that took place at Del Monte Manor on Yosemite Street on December 21st 1969. Mason has waived his extradition from Texas and will be arraigned when he arrives in Monterey County.

An arrest warrant was issued for a Santa Cruz councilman who missed a court date for a reckless driving case. Councilman Tony Madrigal was pulled over August 30th for swerving and driving along the center divider after officers say he was typing on his laptop computer and texting. Madrigal failed to appear for his arraignment last month and an arrest warrant was issued but then later rescinded after he contacted the court. Madrigals’ next court date is set for November 10th, if convicted, he faces up to 90-days in jail and a 1-thousand dollar fine.

4 men are being sought in connection with a drive-by shooting that took place last night in Santa Cruz. The 9 p.m. incident occurred near the Dream Inn, when 4 people inside a car pulled up to a man, who was walking on West Cliff Drive at Beach Street, when an exchange of words took place. A passenger from inside the car fired a single gunshot at the victim. Meanwhile, the vehicle, a 2000 or newer model white Toyota Corolla Sedan, was last seen going down West Cliff Drive. Police in Watsonville are investigating a fatal shooting that took place during a robbery attempt this afternoon. The 1 p.m. shooting occurred at the Fiesta Latino Market at Beck and Center streets when the gunman went into the market, talked to the clerk, walked out of the market, then returned, demanded cash and then fatally shot the clerk. Police are searching for a white male in his 20’s with a blonde or brown shaved head, heavyset, about 6-feet tall. This is Watsonville’s 1st murder this year, and 15th in the county.
