PRUNEDALE BURGLARY SUSPECT SHOT 10-20-10 10:10 a.v.

A man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg after attempting to burglarize a Prunedale home yesterday. Monterey County Sheriff’s Deputies say Craig Bowers tried breaking into the home at around 10 p.m. when the home’s occupant was armed with a gun and ordered Bowers to get out of the house. Bowers reportedly continued to approach the man, who then fired his gun towards the victim. Bowers fled the scene and was later found by deputies at a Gilroy hospital.

SEASIDE HAUNTED BARN 10-20-10 10:00 a.v.

A Halloween fundraiser is being planned by a local non-profit group to help raise money for abused horses. The Redwings Horse Sanctuary, a foster home for horses in need, has 85 rescued horses currently at their stables in Prunedale and Lockwood. Since the downturn of the economy, the sanctuary is in need of food and cares for the animals and will be holding a “Haunted Barn” to help them care for the horses. The Haunted Barn will be located in Seaside this year in the Laguna Plaza at 1144 Fremont Boulevard.

CHOMP LAYOFFS 10-20-10 09:30 a.v.

As part of increased cost-cutting moves, nearly 4-dozen Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula employees are expected to be laid off tomorrow. Hospital officials say 43 employees including nurses, nutritionists, lab workers and security personnel will be laid off as part of an effort to cut 21-million dollars in spending. The recent round of layoffs follows an earlier round in the spring that included 20-layoffs, including 11 involuntary and 30 early retirements.

U.C.S.C GETS STREETS NAMED 10-20-10 08:30 a.v.

In an effort to improve navigation around U.C. Santa Cruz, all campus roads, streets, drives and ways have been named. The new names come after many roads were left un-named when the school was founded 45-years ago after a larger network of buildings and streets were envisioned by initial planners. The 29-new street names have been updated on online campus maps but U.C.S.C’s I-T department is expected to send Google and other digital map makers the revisions, which is said to be done within the next few months.

GRANT AWARDED TO SO. COUNTY HOUSING 10-20-10 07:30 a.v.

A non-profit affordable housing developer based in Gilroy, which serves the Hollister area, has been awarded a million dollar grant. President and CEO of South County Housing, Dennis Lalor received the award on October 14th. The grant is expected to be used for the development of affordable housing in Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey Counties. Incorporated in 1979, South County Housing is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit public benefit corporation that provides affordable housing and services for lower-income households.
