MARINA DOG INSTITUTE APPROVED 10-21-10 19:30 a.v.

During a 4-to-1 vote this week, Marina City Council members approved a 50-year lease for a proposed education-recreation center for dogs on 21-acres of city land on a Fort Ord site. The lease approval comes after a 3-year effort by representative for the Institute for Canine Studies to secure a site for the proposed Marina development. The project includes dog parks and other facilities that will be welcome to the public. The project is expected to also include access for horse riders, hikers and bicyclists.

MCO EMPLOYEE GRAND THEFT ARREST 10-21-10 19:20 a.v.

A Salinas woman was sentenced to spend time in prison along with several years on probation for felony grand theft. 29-year old Elizabeth Serrano is expected to spend 41 days in jail and serve 3 years probation time after obtaining access to a debit card belonging to an aid-recipient while temporarily working at the Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services. Serrano reportedly used the card at an ATM window to withdraw $760 in cash aid allotted to the client’s family. Serrano pleaded guilty on September 9th to the charges.

PAJARO VALLEY SCHOOL BUS COLLISION 10-21-10 18:30 a.v.

A school bus was involved in a head-on collision this afternoon in the outside Las Lomas, in the Watsonville area. The 2:50 p.m. accident took place southeast of Pajaro at Highway 12 and Sill Road, when the bus was leaving the Hall District School on it’s way to a Watsonville event when it was hit by an Isuzu Trooper. The 35 children on board the bus, who were first, fourth, and fifth graders, were not injured and were taken to Hall School where their parents picked them up.

SCOTTS VALLEY BAT WARNING 10-14-10 18:20 a.v.

A warning has been issued in Scotts Valley after 2 bats, that tested positive for rabies, were found. Health officials say the bats, which were picked up by Santa Cruz County Animal Services, are believed have come into contact with a domesticated cat on October 12th. Officials with Santa Cruz County Animal Services say that residents need to take all precautions and avoid any contact with bats, and if a domestic pet is found playing with an injured or wild animal, owners are asked to contact their veterinarian or Santa Cruz Animal Services at 831-454-7303.

S.C. Child Porn Sting 10/21/10 10:45am TDH

Santa cruz police have announced that a month-long investigation culminated with the arrest of 5 men, who are accused of distributing child pornography.    19-year-old kyle unger, 21-year-old eryk mcgill, and 26-year-old robert paris were taken into custody  yesterday, as were 54-year-old robert paris, along with a 17-year-old.   The joint-investigation by santa cruz authorities and the san jose internet crimes against children officers, allegedly turned up thousands of lewd images and videos.   It is not alleged that the men manufactured the pornography.
