FURLOUGH FRIDAY 10-22-10 11:00 a.v.

Due to state funding cuts, the Superior Court in Watsonville, along with the DMV, will be closed today. Some offices at the courthouse in Santa Cruz will also be closed due to the furlough, however drop boxes will be available at Santa Cruz clerk’s offices up until 5 p.m. this evening. Court users are encouraged to visit santa cruz court dot org to pay traffice and criminal fines. Furloughs are expected on the 4th Friday of each month through next March. The mandatory furloughs reportedly amount to a nearly 14-percent pay cut for state workers.

CENTRAL COAST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 10-22-10 10:20 a.v.

According to data released from the state today, California’s unemployment rate remained unchanged last month at 12.4%. The state’s Employment Development Department reported that non-farm jobs fell by 63,600 during last month. In Monterey County, the unemployment rate remained at 10.5% last month, while Santa Cruz County’s unemployment rate went down slightly to 10.9% in September from 11% in August, and in San Benito County, the unemployment rate was also down slightly to 14.7% from 14.8% in August.

SALINAS HARDWARE STORE ROBBERY 10-22-10 08:30 a.v.

Police in Salinas are searching for an armed gunman who robbed an area hardware store last night. Police say the clerk at the Main Street Ace Hardware was approached just after 7 p.m. by a suspect who had his face covered and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. The suspect demanded money and pointed a handgun at the clerk. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the anonymous crime tip line at 1-800-78-crime.

SVMHS PROTESTS BUYOUT OFFERS 10-22-10 07:30 a.v.

About 40 employees from Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System were picketing a round of voluntary buyout offers yesterday afternoon. The layoffs, which are part of a cost-saving move, are expected to affect about 165 union workers.  A longtime vocational nurse with S-V-M-H-S says staff members are already overworked, and the quality of patient care could drastically decline. Meanwhile, the Vice President of Operations for S-V-M-H-S stressed that the quality of care will not be affected and they plan on moving forward with the buyout offers.

SAFE TO GO TO SCHOOL/SALINAS HIGH 10-22-10 07:00 a.v.

Automated voicemails were left for many parents of students at Salinas High School last night saying that it was safe to go to school today. The messages were left after parents and students had concerns over the increase in law enforcement presence throughout the week on school grounds. Salinas High Principal, Sascha Heckmann said last night that there are no known threats to students safety, Salinas Police would be patrolling the school as an added security for students.
