PRISON GUARD ARRESTED - 10/28/10 07:59 S.S.

A  38  YEAR-OLD  SALINAS  MAN,  WHO  WORKED  AS  A  PRISON  GUARD  IN SOLEDAD,  WAS  ARRESTED  THIS  WEEK  IN  GILROY.      SERGIO  JAVIER  NOGUERA IS  BELIEVED  TO  HAVE  SMUGGLED  DRUGS  AND  CELL  PHONES  INTO  SALINAS  VALLEY  STATE  PRISON.     HE  WAS  BOOKED  INTO  SANTA  CLARA  COUNTY  JAIL,   AFTER  MEETING  WITH  SOME  UNDERCOVER  DETECTIVES  IN  GILROY.

USDA GRANT RE: FUNGUS ELIMINATION - 10/28/10 07:45 S.S.

SCIENTISTS,    WHO  ARE  WORKING  TO  ELIMINATE  A  FUNGUS  (THAT  INFECTS  VARIOUS  MONTEREY  COUNTY  CROPS),    HAVE  RECEIVED  A  4-YEAR,  1.5  MILLION  DOLLAR  GRANT.      THE  MONEY  COMES  FROM THE  U.S. DEPARTMENT  OF  AGRICULTURE.       REPORTEDLY  IMPORTED  SPINACH  SEEDS  HAVE  CARRIED  THE  FUNGUS  TO  VARIOUS  KINDS  OF  LETTUCES  AND  STRAWBERRIES.

LATE NEWSPAPER DELIVERY THIS A.M. - 10/28/10 06:45 S.S.

THE  SALINAS  CALIFORNIAN  NEWSPAPER  SAYS  THAT  DUE  TO  TRANSPORTATION  ISSUES  THIS  MORNING,   THEIR  DELIVERY  TRUCK  WAS  DELAYED  A  COUPLE  OF  HOURS.    THEY  SAY  THAT  PAPERS  WILL  BE  DELIVERED  TO  HOMES  “IN  TOWN”   BY  8  O’CLOCK  THIS  MORNING,  AND  BY  9  A.M.  TO  THOSE  HOMES  THEY  DELIVER  TO  THAT  ARE  “OUT  OF  TOWN”.

FORECLOSURE AND LOAN SCAMS - 10/28/10 06:15 S.S.

With  the  number  of “foreclosure” and  “loan modification” scams  on  the  rise,  the  Watsonville  Law  Center plans  to  hold  a  free  legal  clinic  on  such  subjects  this  weekend.    Although  appointments  are  still  available  for  this  saturday  afternoon,  they  are  filling  up  quickly.     The  phone  number  to  call  (for  an  appointment   between  1  and  3:30  p.m.)  is  (831) 722 – 2845.

LATE NIGHT SHOOTING - 10/28/10 06:11 S.S.

2  men  were  injured  in  a  late  night shooting  on  San  Juan Grade  Road  last  night.     The  11  p.m.  incident  occurred  in  the parking  lot of  a  restaurant  after  a  fight  broke  out.    Both  men,  who  suffered  leg  wounds,  are  expected  to survive.
