BOMB SQUAD KEPT BUSY - 11/01/10 17:00 S.S.

MEMBERS  OF  the  SANTA  CRUZ  COUNTY  SHERIFF’S  OFFICE  BOMB  SQUAD WERE  BUSY  WITH  2  SEPARATE  INCIDENTS  toDAY.     THE  1ST WAS   A  SUSPICIOUS  PACKAGE  THAT  WAS  FOUND  ON  THE  400  BLOCK  OF  SWIFT STREET IN  SANTA  CRUZ.     IT  TURNED  OUT  TO  BE  A  BIKE LOCK  THAT HAD  BEEN  REPAIRED  BY  WRAPPING  IT  IN  DUCT  TAPE.     THE  2ND BOMB  SCARE  WAS  A  “SUSPICIOUS  VEHICLE”   IN  the  PARKING  LOT  OF  the  ORCHARD  SUPPLY  HARDWARE STORE  ON  GREEN  VALLEY ROAD IN   WATSONVILLE.    IN  THAT  ONE  IT  TURNED  OUT  THAT  AN  ELECTRICAL  ENGINEER  WAS  WORKING  ON  AN  EXPERIMENTAL  DEVICE  IN  HIS  CAR.  HE  WAS  BRIEFLY  DETAINED  AND  THEN  RELEASED.

P.V. MAN/WOMAN OF THE YEAR 11-01-10 11:40 a.v.

The Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture announced  Man and Woman of the Year last week. C-E-O of California Giant Berry Farms, Bill Moncovich and director of the Santa Cruz County Fair Jody Belgard Akimoto have been named the man and woman of the year. Both will be honored during the chamber’s annual dinner held on January 29th. In addition, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Association and Watsonville Police Activities League were named Organization of the Year.

SUSPICIOUS PKG FOUND IN S.C. 11-01-10 11:30 a.v.

A suspicious package discovered this morning in Santa Cruz is being investigated. A bomb unit was called to the scene where the package was found on the 400 block of Swift Street as a precaution. Swift Street, between Delaware and Jeter Streets, was expected to be closed to traffic until noon.

S.C. HALLOWEEN ARRESTS - UPDATE 11-01-10 11:0 a.v.

Over 100 officers were on hand when roughly 20,000 people gathered in downtown Santa Cruz last night for the Halloween festivities. Police made a total of 40 arrests for multiple charges including public intoxication, battery, possession of a concealed weapon, and drug possession. 23 Municipal Code Violations were also issued for open container violations and urinating in public. A fight was reported at about 9:45 p.m. on Pacific Avenue, one person suffered a broken nose during the incident. Police also made a number contacts with known county and out of county gang members through-out the night.

MCO OPERATION BOO 11-01-10 08:30 a.v.

8 registered sex offenders are now behind bars after a statewide program was enforced last night in Monterey County. “Operation Boo” which targets registered sex offenders not complying with their parole, consisted of state agents going door-to-door making sure offenders were not passing out candy or answering their doors. Extra patrols were sent out to areas known to be the biggest threat to children, such as Gilroy, Prunedale and Salinas. State agents arrested one Salinas man after finding porn on his cell phone and candy at his house on Halloween night.
