RADIOACTIVE DEVICE STOLEN IN SALINAS 11-03-10 12:50 a.v.

Police in Salinas are investigating a vehicle theft yesterday morning that contained equipment with radioactive substances. Police say a moisture density gauge was stolen from a vehicle in the 400 block of Rainer Drive just before 9 a.m. The gauge, called a Troxler 34-40, was in a yellow case about 18-inches tall, 16-inches deep and 34-inches wide, and contains small amounts of Cesium 137 and Americium 241. Police say there is no safety concern unless the device is broken or damaged, and anyone who has or finds it, is asked to call 9-1-1.

SEAGULLS SIGHTED WITH BEER CANS 11-03-10 12:10 a.v.

The public’s help is being sought in locating Seagulls that have been found with beer cans around their neck. Wildlife experts believe that someone is catching and collaring the birds with cut beer cans. Reported sightings of the birds have been made from Half Moon Bay and other various locations through-out the Bay Area. Officials with Monterey-based WildRescue, say the mistreatment of animals is a Federal crime punishable by severe fines, imprisonment or both.

PVWMA WATER EXPORT MTG 11-03-10 10:30 a.v.

A proposal is expected to be considered later today to provide some North Monterey County homes with water from the Aromas Water District. The proposal would make 60-homes in the Via del Sol and Oakridge Neighborhoods, areas with poor water quality, available with a quality-rich water supply from Aromas. The board of directors with the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency will consider the proposal, which requires an exemption from 2 agency rules banning export of Pajaro Valley water.

ORGANIC FARMING RESEARCH FUNDING 11-03-10 10:00 a.v.

Over $200,000 was raised last month in an effort to fund the Santa Cruz based Organic Farming Research Foundation. $85,000 was raised during the 18th annual Organic Harvest Benefit dinner in San Francisco, and $128,000 was raised after a community giving day took place when people shopped at 31 Whole Foods in the Northern California and Reno regions. Proceeds from the events will go towards work to help transform agriculture by providing organic farmers with the policy tools and production they need to thrive.

2010 ARTWORKS AWARD RECIPIENTS 11-03-10 09:30 a.v.

The Santa Cruz City Arts Commission’s 2010 Art-WORKS award recipients were announced this week. Recipients are recognized for their impact on the arts through contributions of time, advocacy and resources, and for strengthening connections between business and arts communities. Winners include Wallace Baine for Individual Leadership, Hula’s Island Grill and Tiki Room for Emerging Business and Ow Family Properties for Sustaining Business. Award winners will be honored on November 18th during a reception at the Museum of Art and History from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on 705 Front Street in Santa Cruz.
