MR. PACIFIC GROVE OBIT 11-10-10 09:30 a.v.

A former fire chief and councilman in Monterey County died this week at the age of 81 at his home in Pacific Grove. Don Gasperson, who was known as “Mr. Pacific Grove” was a graduate of Pacific Grove High School, attended Monterey Peninsula College before joining the Pacific Grove Fire Department in 1949. He served as a fire chief from 1962 until he retired in 1984, he then served on Pacific Grove’s City Council as well as local and state committees for over 20 years. Gasperson was appointed Vice Mayor in 2002 until 2004. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, 2 sons and a brother. A memorial service is slated for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at 1st United Methodist Church located at 915 Sunset Drive in Pacific Grove.

SC social services reform 11/10/10 0700 E.A.

Social services reform was unanimously approved at the Santa Cruz City Council meeting on Tuesday. The city council's plan identifies priority areas, financial assistance, health care, and resident safety. The plan suggests that funding be doled to organizations based on their ability to address those needs. How the 1 million dollar stream will be allocated is the focus of the next City Council meeting, which is 11 a.m. On November 17 at the Santa Cruz Central Branch Public library.

Self-Defense in SC Schools 11/10/10 0700 E.A.

Self-defense classes are being offered at Santa Cruz schools. Self-Defense classes have been offered at Santa Cruz High since 2006, and a new series classes at Branciforte Middle School began on Monday. The classes include physical defense moves, as well as posture and tone of voice. The Santa Cruz City Schools District began implementing the classes after numerous reports of unwanted advances on students in the district.

MURDER TRIAL BEGINS FOR SEASIDE MAN 11-10-10 07:30 a.v.

A jury trial began this week for a Seaside man accused of killing his wife 2 years ago. The trial for 62-year old Dan Mark Gibson, a former employee of the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad, got underway Monday, and is expected to last about 2 weeks. Police say the body of 53-year old Maria Christina Gibson was found on October 31st of 2008 inside the couple’s apartment on the 1,000 block of Highland Street. Gibson faces 25-years-to-life-in-prison if convicted of murder.

SLV SOLAR PANELS INSTALLATION 11-10-10 07:00 a.v.

A project that’s expected to save over 1-million dollars in spending towards electrical costs over the next 25-years, is slated to begin  in the San Lorenzo Valley Water District next year. 3 water treatment sites are expected to house thousands of solar panels.  The panels are set to be installed at the Lyon Water Treatment Plant in Boulder Creek, the Kirby Plant in Felton and the Manana Woods Plant in Scotts Valley. The panels are expected to be operational by spring or summer of next year.
