A construction project to help the environment at Elkhorn Slough is scheduled to begin today. The purpose of the Parsons Slough Project is the construction of an underwater sill, to slow the outgoing tide. the sill will help conserve wetlands, protect wildlife and reduce impacts from tidal erosion. More than 300 bird species, several fish, shark and ray species, and dozens of other animals use the slough.

P-G-And-E customers in Hollister and the rest of San Benito County will receive letters in the mail shortly, informing them of the installation of Smart Meters in their area. The meters are expected to be installed within the next month. P-G-and-E plans to have 10 million Smart meters installed in California by 2012, the electric company has already installed 7-million meters.

The annual food drive is currently underway in San Benito County. The Community Food Bank of San Benito County is collecting food from nearly 100 locations around the county, which will help more than 3-thousand families. The 8th Big Sur Half-Marathon was held yesterday (Sunday), with out-of-state competitors taking victories in both the men’s and women’s divisions. The winner of the Men’s Division was 25-year-old Macdonald Ondara of New Mexico and the winner of the women’s division was 21 year-old Belainesh Gabre of Arizona. Gabre’s time of 1-hour-9-minutes broke the women’s course record by 3 minutes. The just over 13 mile race had over 57-hundred patricipants.
