Animal Abuse, Sal. 12/12/10 8:45pm TDH

A Salinas woman was arrested on Saturday on animal abuse charges.  51-year-old Barbara Pickett faces 7-counts of animal cruelty, after authorities found 7, severely neglected dogs in her house on Sierra Madre Drive.   Health officials deemed the house "uninhabitable" due to the conditions inside, and the 7-dogs were discovered to have several health problems, including blindness and deafness due to neglect.  Animal control officers seized the dogs, and Pickett was booked into Monterey County Jail.

Sal. Molester Pleads No Contest 12/12/10 8:45pm TDH

A former employee with the Salinas Police Department pleaded no contest last week to 2-counts of sexual intercourse with a minor.   As part of the plea deal, 28-year-old Scott Callan will not have to register as a sex offender.  Callan had faced more than a dozen charges, relating to his abuse of a 16-year-old that he had met in the Salinas Police Department's Explorer Program (for young people).   Callan is expected to be sentenced to 3-years in prison, when he returns to court on January 20th.

Prelim Hearing Waived 12/10/10 6:15pm TDH

2-people accused of attempting to sell their baby outside of a wal-mart in Salinas this past summer, have waived their right to a preliminary hearing.  38-year-old Patrick fousek and 20-year-old Samantha Tomasini face child endangerment charges, following an incident in june.   The couple is accused of offering their 6-month-old child to 2-strangers, in exchange for 25-dollars.  They have pleaded not guilty, and are due back in court on February 23rd.

Fatal Fire was Suicide 12/10/10 5:45pm TDH

Salians Fire investigators believe a fatal fire at a house this week, was a case of suicide.   Investigators believe 59-year-old Garrett Gould intentionally set the fire in a successful attempt to take his own life.  Gould's body was discovered at 6:40 p.m. on Wednesday, at his house on the 15-hundred block of Caceras Circle.

Trial Set, Sex Crimes 12/10/10 5:45pm TDH

A trial date has been set for a man accused of sexually abusing a minor.  60-year-old Steven Sande, is due to appear in court on April 18th.   The former middle school teacher faces several charges, including continuous abuse of a child, and possession of child pornography.   Sande resigned from his teaching position after the accusations were made public.  He is currently free on bail.
