Vogel will take the position on Thursday, September 2nd, the day after Police Chief Howard Skerry retires. The Santa Cruz City Manager hopes to have a decision on a permanent replacement in December. Many believe that Vogel will retain the Police Chief job, as he has support from fellow officers, and as city leaders prefer to hire from within the department.
