Rail Trail Virtual Ribboncutting Recap 12.14.2020 0800 5 JS

On Friday afternoon, the virtual ribbon cutting ceremony took place.

Here’s what Guy Preston, Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission had to say about the project.

“This trail is a much needed addition to our county’s transportation infrastructure and built on a vision of providing a robust, active transportation network so we can live in a healthier and more sustainable community”, Guy said.

“I see a transformation occurring, where people of all ages and abilities are seeking safe and more enjoyable travel outside of a vehicle. We have done this together. We went so far as to tax ourselves via Measure D to ensure that we had the funding to deliver. For that I thank you the public along with the city of Santa Cruz who has been an amazing partner to the RTC.”

Preston also mentions that the Coastal Rail trail is the “Spine” in the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail, and that this 1.2 mile stretch was listed as the highest priority given the population density.

Study on San Ardo Earthquakes 12.14.2020 0700 4 JS

A study that was recently announced found that earthquakes around the San Ardo oil field are tied to wastewater injection.

The study is led by a professor of seismology at the University of Memphis and another professor of geophysics at Virginia Tech. The two examined over 40 years of wastewater injection data and nearly 2,000 earthquakes.

What they discovered was San Ardo earthquakes would occur near wastewater wells and the rate of earthquake activity relates to the rates of wastewater injection.

The delay in correlating the two events consists of 13 to 17 months between the wastewater injection rate and earthquake activities.
